Anyone want a BLT?

So, Bizarre Love Triangle. Who'd have thought this would be the single that sidelined us temporarily?

There are three hurdles here. While a US CD single was released in the mid-90's containing all the mixes, it appears to be an early victim of the loudness war. The volume of the disc isn't maxed out, but the dynamics within each track are crushed. My friend who is doing the audio restoration had intended to source Bizarre Dub Triangle (a.k.a. I Don't Care) from this disc, but it wouldn't have sounded right alongside the other tracks. He doesn't own a physical copy of the 12" single, so off to Toronto my copy goes. I mailed it a few days ago but it could take up to two weeks to reach him.

We'd also planned to include the unique Canadian 7" mix, but discovered that (just like The Perfect Kiss) one version was issued commercially, then withdrawn, then a second version was released in its place. Neither of us has a physical copy of that second (unique) mix, so a friend in England is sending his over. Again, it could take a couple of weeks to reach Toronto.

Finally, the artwork, which is a photo of treated metal that has some distinct markings running from front to back, is taking a little longer than expected. Scanning the sleeve was no problem but piecing it together to make a nice, seamless image for the slipcase requires some photoshop trickery to fill in the 1/8" inch gap where the image wraps around the spine of the single. I've made a couple of attempts already but they weren't up to my (admittedly unforgiving) standards. I'll continue working on it while waiting for the audio to be finished.

Once Bizarre Love Triangle has been posted, there are seven singles left:

True Faith (already done)
Touched By The Hand Of God
Blue Monday '88
Fine Time (already done)
Round & Round
Run 2 (already done)
World In Motion

  1. Good things come to those who wait, and it will be worth the wait, I am sure. :)

  2. Fixed, but as far as I'm concerned the title is Bizarre Dub Triangle. ;)

I have no idea why the record label felt compelled to rename it for the US market.

  3. I put the single in the post this morning, so you're at the mercy of The Royal Mail.

As for 'I Don't Care', it was allegedly Rob Gretton's flippant reply to the hapless Qwest employee that telephoned the management to find out what the instrumental mix was called...

  4. Can you clarify what you mean w/r/t the Canadian 7". I have a canadian gatefold 7" for BLT. Are you saying there are two unique edits that were only available in Canada, one on the recalled 7" and one on the second issue of the canadian BLT 7" or is there only one canadian 7" edit?

  5. The first Canadian 7" has FAC-26A inscribed in the deadwax, and it plays the same mix as the UK 7". It was withdrawn and replaced with a different mix - that still came in the gatefold sleeve - but had FAC26A-2 in the deadwax.

I don't know how different the versions are, because I've never heard FAC26A-2. It may very well turn out to be nothing special, but we need to find out before moving forward. I'd be thrilled if it turned out to be the Stephen Hague mix used on the Married To The Mob soundtrack and has the extra little vocal line from Bernard after the first chorus.

  6. I'll check my copy this evening when I get home. I know Zulu Records on 4th in Kitsalano/Vancouver BC had a copy for sale last time I was there.

  7. My copy is FAC26A-2. I'll check it against the Married To The Mob version. On the surface, the MTTM version is 3:56 and the 7" is 3:40. Will report back in a bit.

    Actually, i'll record my 7" (Technics 1200 / Ortofon cart / Vestax / Harmon-Kardon cd burner) and send you a d/l link.

  11. I was just thinking about BLT (Mmmm bacon) and remembered that back in 91 there was a cassette on the front of Select magazine which was dedicated to Factory records and there was a version of BLT on there. I haven't got the cassette any more, but just googles and found this;

Not sure if you know about it at all, but thought I would throw it in the knowledge pool.

  12. FAC 26A-2 turns out to be a re-edit of the UK 7" mix. It eliminates some of the instrumental portions and repeats the chorus an extra time (or two?). Despite having fewer elements than the original 7", it's a more radio-friendly edit, focusing on the main hook of the song.
