Notes form the restorer:
Unlike most of the tracks on Substance, I thought these needed a bit of boost in the highs instead of a cut.
State Of The Nation is either an album cut from Brotherhood or a non-LP single, depending on which version of the album you bought. The vinyl LP doesn't have it at all, while the CD has it tacked on at the end, and then there's the deluxe cassette edition I have which has both State and Shame added one apiece onto each side.

Once again, the band broke form by not only giving the song a title that referenced the lyrics, but also using the most obvious line for it. The big surprise here is the B-side, which given the previous tracks with titles that consisted of similar wordplay (Shellcock, Dub-Vulture), would lead one to expect a randomized and chopped-up dub mix. Instead, Shame Of The Nation is really John Robie's mix and production of the song, for which he was given co-production and songwriting credit, whereas State is credited only to the band. Unlike his previous efforts, here he pulls back on the excessive effects and edits that characterized Shellshock and Sub-Culture, giving something that is equally as listenable as the A-side.

It seems this one is regarded as a somewhat average effort by the group. Personally, while I didn't care much for it at first, the song has really grown on me. I will occasionally drop State in one of my DJ sets.

  2. I used to fast forward State of the Nation on my Substance 1987 tape, just to get to Bizarre Love Triangle. Now, I prefer State over BLT. I'm hoping that your masterwork on BLT will make me love that song again.

  3. Hi, I just found your blog today and must say well done on what you have done so far and will be following the rest of the results with great interest. It is great that you are including promo edits and things like that (especially the RM remix of Sub Culture).

I am not sure if you take requests but is there any chance of putting the alternate Love will tear us apart up at some point as this is proving to be very elusive for me to find in a digital format and I have always liked this version, sometimes more that the A side.

Anyway, brilliant work, shame they didn't use you on the deluxe 2cd versions released last year.

  4. Thanks Alan.

My intent is to do all of Joy Division's Factory singles once I'm done with the New Order ones, so yes, the alternate mix of LWTUA will make an appearance. It was used on the Permanent compilation from '95, if you can find that.

  6. Thanks, I didn't realise it was on Permanent, so I have just ordered a cd of that. :-)

  7. I think I've found another glitch at 2.18 on True Faith. Same kinda glitch as the first one. Sorry to be a pain, can remember hearing these on Substance and thinking it was peculiar to my copy!

  8. May thanks for putting all of these together - great job. I've not been able to download this release (State of the Nation), or Blue Monday '88. Both get to the point of download, then seize up. I'm wondering if something has gone wrong with these two links since your original posting (as I'm well over a year behind the crowd in these releases!) If you could take a look, that would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.
