[Link removed 20 November 2012] (38 MB)

Run 2
Factory Records Fac 273
Produced by New Order
August 1989

Tracklisting:

1. Run 2
2. Run 2 (Extended Version)
3. MTO
4. MTO (Minus Mix)

Source: Run 2 Factory UK 12" single Fac 273.

Notes from the restorer:

Released at the height of their popularity, this single is surprisingly rare. A remix of a track from their 1989 album Technique, it was quickly deleted after John Denver took action against the band, claiming that part of the tune resembled his song Leaving On A Jet Plane (after listening to Denver's song, I must confess I don't really hear much resemblance).

For the longest time, this was the most expensive record I'd ever bought. I paid $50 for one in a rather battered sleeve over fifteen years ago. I'd never seen another copy before, and I still haven't seen one since, so I was a bit surprised to read that apparently 20,000 were pressed. I've also been told that the single was deliberately limited and this was the plan all along, but that would seem to defy even Factory's reality-deficient business logic.

In addition to being quite scarce, this single is unusual in a couple of other ways. It's cut at 33 RPM instead of 45, and the overall quality of the pressing isn't as high as their other releases.

Slight cut at 3KHz.

Oh, and there are a couple of really bad edits in MTO -- so bad that I thought the needle had jumped the groove when I first heard it.
Run 2 was remixed by Scott Litt, who during the late 80's was notable for working with REM. The main difference between the album version and Run 2 is that the song has been made more radio-friendly by replacing the long instrumental run-out with another repeat of the chorus. I'm not sure if this was geared toward the American market, but the video was in rotation on MTV's 120 Minutes and there were promo cassettes of these tracks circulating at Warner Brothers during the summer of 1989. My hunch is that the lawsuit nixed a US single release because Denver had to be given a co-writing credit (and would have to be paid royalties).

Despite being listed on later compilations, Run 2 only appeared on this single. All other tracks titled Run 2 play the standard album version from
Technique - with the exception of the video on A Collection.

It's never been clarified whether the B-side MTO stands for "made to order", "mid tempo one" (standard demo naming convention within the New Order camp), or "much too old", which is a play on the lyrics from Fine Time. It's pretty much a throw-away track, and the bad edits in question are actually more like the effect of a DJ cutting in and out of a song by using the faders on a mixer - something I've seen and heard Derrick May do during his live sets.

  2. first of all, thanks so much for your work £50 and bruno.

i'm currently working on a recycle itunes lp, but i'd like to have your input on design and functionality in case you're interested in this at all...
i might not make it in time for world in motion though

    cheers, chr

  3. I picked up a copy the week after it came out, took it up to the counter without looking at the price sticker and the store was selling it for 25 pounds. As I was with my then girlfriend I pretended I wasn't in the least bit shocked and still bought it!

  4. Another great job, and from vinyl to boot. Any chance of also putting the Confusion issue on Minimal Records throught thre Recycle process? I have a pristine copy I could digitize.

Also kudos on the images for all the releases. So nice to have HQ images to along with the music.

  5. Guys, this is a wonderful project and I've been singing its praises to all and sundry (and constantly forgetting to post a comment thanking you!). It's a travesty that this sort of work has to be done by the fans, but I'm very grateful that someone's doing it. They've never sounded so good!

As far as I recall, Run 2 was a limited edition (here in the UK anyway), and 20,000 copies does ring a bell, although it was 20 years ago, so my memory may be faulty. And have you tried singing "Jet Plane" along with "Run" (or vice versa)? They are pretty damn similar...

  6. I remember hearing when it came out that it was deliberately limited.

  8. I found a copy on discogs for $10 about a month ago. The day I sent payment I found a copy at a local shop, also $10. I bought both and gave one to a friend.

  9. A big kudos to all involved in this project. I am one of the many who was burned by the New Order reissue fiasco (still waiting for my free replacement discs in the mail.) I've heard there's a similar project out there for the band's albums, all sourced from original vinyl (similar to the Dr. Ebbets Beatles series.) Any info on that or where it's available?

  10. @Jonas - I can confirm they've been done by our good friend over at The Power Of Independent Trucking blog, but none of them have been made public. I've debated asking him if I can post them here, but there are some other projects in the pipeline first.

  11. by the way, here's the link to that itunes lp booklet. it's not quite ready yet (missing credits, slideshow could be better, should lyrics be included?), but i'd be glad to hear your opinion:

  12. @chr - that's quite nice. I did some Googling to figure out how to build one, and it's essentially a small self-contained website as an .itlp file. My HTML skills are rudimentary, but this looks like something I'd like to play around with.

  13. I noticed some talk about remastered albums from lp sources. I have most of the originals on vinyl already. Does anyone know if the vinyl remasters were the same botched efforts or were they respectable?

  14. @ahoyskin - I don't know anyone who's bought them and can confirm, but there are some problems with the artwork, so I'd take that as a warning.

I have all the original Factory vinyl, too.

  15. And one more question about restoration of NO albums by your friend - can we hope that this project will have the same stunning audio restoration from vinyl as yours? I was amazed at the quality of work!

  16. @Александр Полетаев - his work sounds amazing.

  17. Thanks for the compliments £50 Note, but if my vinyl transfers are even close to brunorepublic's I'll eat my shirt. All my LP transfers, and quite a few of my singles, suffer from noticeable inner groove distortion, and brunorepublic's transfers of the same material I've done in the past is light years better. So if I were you I'd stick poor br with the task of sucking it off your original Factory LPs as he did with the 7"/12" discs...

  18. @chr = That's WAY cool. How does one associate the aac files with the albums, or is that something that won't work until you're done with it?

  19. we should come up with ideas for future projects

    i would say
    omd
    INXS
    Philip jap
    The Farm
    Pet Shop Boys
    nitzer ebb

stuff that hasnt been around for years and will never have a boxset or remaster release

  20. @michael - glad you like it. actually this should work right now, as long as you haven't renamed the tracks or albums. i should probably start my own blog, since i don't want to hijack this comment box.

if you've got ideas for features or improvements drop me a line.

  21. @ Music Archivist - thanks, but we have a number of projects underway for this blog already.

Additionally, Bruno Republic has already done/is doing Pet Shop Boys' singles, but it's up to him if he chooses to make them public. I'd be interested in doing Nitzer Ebb sometime because I have everything, but that's asking a lot of work from Bruno for a band he doesn't care about.

    The others don't interest me.

  22. oh, i'd love to see a pet shop boys singles-box as well. even though i'm pretty sure they're the only band in that list who might actually release their back-catalogue in a way that's worth spending loads of money on. got almost all of their 80s/early 90s stuff on vinyl. but my own transfers are amateurish to say the least.

an omd-recycle-style boxset would be nice, if only for the artwork (to their early singles). don't really care too much for their b-sides and remixes.

  23. I'd love to do a "Recycle" treatment on the On-U Sound/Tackhead singles, all aliases, etc. Not really in line with what JD/NO fans are into... but there's a similar level of LACK there, as far as having so many great 12" tracks practically unavailable in a digital format.

Thank you so much for this first phase of Recycle!

BTW, I do have a copy of Run(2)... Haven't checked the sleeve condition, but I remember getting it for $35 in the late 90s at a local store in Orange County, CA (when I lived there), and remembered it being in good condition. If you need scans, I might be able to help. Although looks like many people above could do the same....

Looking forward to Phase Two of Recycle. :) :)

  24. Thank you so much for Phase one of Recycle!

If there happens to be Tackhead fans here (unlikely, but who knows), I have a shelf of Tackhead+related 12" that really needs a similar Recycle treatment. Hopefully, Sherwood, LeBlanc, and the gang would be OK with this, in theory?

Looking forward to Phase Two. :) :)
